1)To get to this utility, open up Control Panel, and type in partition into the search box.. you’ll immediately see the link show up:

Linux distributions like Ubuntu open the main menu with Alt+F1 instead of the Windows key that most new Linux users would be expecting, but it used to be simple to change the shortcut key. Since Ubuntu 9.10 the process isn’t so obvious, but we’ve got the instructions for you.

Just in case you’re a total newb, here’s the menu we’re talking about:

Change the Gnome Main Menu Shortcut Key to the Windows Key
The first thing you’d normally do is head to System –> Preferences –> Keyboard Shortcuts to change out the shortcut key, but sadly the “Show the panel’s main menu” can’t be assign to the Windows key. You can hit the key as much as you want, but it won’t work here.

What you’re going to need to do is either open up a terminal or use the Alt+F2 shortcut key to bring up the Run Application dialog, and then paste in the following:

gconftool-2 --set /apps/metacity/global_keybindings/panel_main_menu --type string "Super_L"

Once you’ve hit the enter key, the Windows key will not only open the main menu, but the Keyboard Shortcuts panel will be updated with “Super L”, which means the left Windows key.

If you’ve got multiple wireless networks or you’ve got one of those dual-band Wireless-N routers that have two separate networks, you might wonder how to tell Windows what network to try to connect to first. Here’s the explanation.

For example, my home network has a lousy Verizon FIOS router that’s only Wireless-G, and so I’ve got a separate Linksys dual-band wireless-N router hooked up inside the FIOS network—the only problem is that we’ve got 3 separate networks going, and as you can see from the screenshot, the lousy YDQ48 network is above lhdevnet in the list, so Windows tries that one first.

Note: naturally, you could disable the networks if you don’t need to use them, but for our scenario we’re assuming that you do.

How to Change the Wireless Network Priority

You’ll want to first head into Network and Sharing Center through the link at the bottom of the dialog, or from the Control Panel.

Click the Manage wireless networks on the left-hand side.

Now you can see the list of networks that you’ve connected to, and you can remove, rename, or move them up or down.

To illustrate this example, I’ve moved YDQ48 down below lhdevnet in the list:

And as you can see, it’s now higher in the priority in the list:

Prevent Windows from Connecting to a Wireless Network Automatically

If you want to have a network in the list, but don’t want Windows to connect to it automatically, you can open up the properties from the Manage Wireless Networks dialog, and then uncheck the box for “Connect automatically when this network is in range”.

The option for “Connect to a more preferred network if available” option will allow you to automatically switch to a better network once it becomes available. You’ll probably want to leave that one alone unless you have a real need for it—stick with using the up/down order in the wireless networks list to determine the priority.

On occasion you will need to edit the hosts file on your machine. Sometimes because of an attack or prank, and others so that you can simply and freely control access to websites and network traffic.

hosts files have been in use since ARPANET. They were used to resolve hosts names before DNS. hosts files would be massive documents used to aide the network name resolution.

Microsoft kept the hosts file alive in Windows networking which is why it varies very little whether used in Windows, OS X or Linux. The syntax stays mostly the same across all platforms. Most hosts files will have several entries for loopback. We can use that for the basic example for the typical syntax.

The first part will be the location to redirect the address to, the second part will be the address that you will want to redirect, and the third part is the comment. They can be separated by a space, but for ease of reading are typically separated by one or two tabs.

127.0.0.1 localhosts #loopback

Now let’s look at accessing the hosts files in the different operating systems…

Windows 7

To access the hosts file in Windows 7 you can use the following command in the Run Line to open notepad and the file.

notepad c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Once notepad is open you can edit the file. In this example we will block Facebook. To do this just enter in the following after the # mark.

0.0.0.0 www.facebook.com

Now that you have edited your Hosts file make sure to save it.

Now notice if we try to access Facebook in IE we can’t get to the page.

We also were not able to get to it in Google Chrome… (check notes at the end). Also for more info on editing your Hosts file.

Ubuntu

In Ubuntu 10.04 and most Linux distro’s you can edit the hosts file directly in the terminal. You can use your favorite editor or even open your favorite GUI text editor. For this example we will use VIM. Like Windows 7, Ubuntu’s hosts file is located in the /etc/ folder, though here it is in the root of the drive. In order to edit the file you will need to open it as root which is why we use sudo here.

Now that it is open we can edit it to redirect Facebook into nothing. You will notice that with Ubuntu there is also a section for IP6. For most needs you will only need to edit it the top section and ignore the IP6.

Now we can save the file and try to go to Facebook.com. Just like in windows we will see that we are now redirected to a site that does not exist.

Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6)

In Snow Leopard, accessing the hosts file is very similar to Ubuntu. Begin in terminal and use your favorite editor, even is you wish to call a GUI text editor, it is easier to do so from terminal.

The file will look a bit more like Windows, only with a little less explanation. Again we are going to redirect Facebook.

This time it seems that 0.0.0.0 is a loopback and will direct you to the computers Apache test page.

To get to System Maintenance you can go through several menus in Control Panel to launch it. If you want easier access to it, we’ll show you how to create a shortcut to it. It’s a basic troubleshooting feature that can clean unused files, perform maintenance tasks, and help prevent problems with your PC.

Create Shortcut to Troubleshoot Using System Maintenance

Right-click an empty area on your Desktop and select New \ Shortcut.

Now type in the following path in the location field.

%systemroot%\system32\msdt.exe -id MaintenanceDiagnostic

In the next step name the shortcut something that will help you remember what it’s for. Here we are using Troubleshoot System Maintenance.

Now we have the new shortcut icon on the desktop.

Double click on the icon and it will bring you directly to System Maintenance and you can begin using the wizard to search for problems, if you want check the box to apply repairs automatically.

Luckily on our system nothing was needed to be changed or updated.

If you do experience problems, you can get a full report on what issues were found..

Then if you want you can easily add it to the Taskbar with a drag and drop.
